One day there was a beheading in front of her house and then she knew it was imperative to leave her country for the safety of her daughters. She did not want them to leave the house for fear they would be abducted, yet she feared to stay in the house in case of a bombing raid on the neighborhood. The bombing and terrorist attacks in Syria had a terrible effect on her and her daughters. She related how she lost her husband and was left with two young daughters to care for. However, listening to her story breaks open the box we may have placed her in, and she then becomes a sister to us. How easy it would be to assume that she is just taking advantage of the situation in Syria to find a new home in Australia. She was well-dressed, fluent in English and did not appear to be the typical refugee we see pictures of in the news. I recently met a Syrian woman who is trying to resettle in Australia with her two daughters. However, each person, despite the name we give them, has a story and if we take the time to hear their story, we might see that they do not fit into the box we have built for them. It is not a big step to then move to hatred.įor some people the name “refugee” means people who are taking advantage of a troubling situation to resettle in another country. Naming a very large group of people as illegal immigrants then means we begin to see every one of them as dangerous to our way of life. That is dangerous because when we name a large group of people in this way, we try to fit all of them into a specific box we have built, rather than look at each person individually.įor some, the name “illegal immigrant” means rapists, drug pushers, criminals or job-stealers. We each build boxes for these names based on our own experiences, stereotypes, prejudices or biases. The problem with names like this is that there is no broadly accepted definition of them. We give them these names so we can determine how we want to relate to them and if they will be acceptable in our community. We know people’s name: refugee, illegal alien, illegal immigrant, undocumented immigrant.

For the first time this year, these will be available at a reduced price. Any tags remaining after the second drawing will be sold over the counter beginning August 25.Īnother opportunity that hunters are showing a lot of interest in is the option of purchasing a second deer or elk tag. The supplemental drawing will be held around August 20. Hunters can apply for the controlled hunt tags at any IDFG hunting and fishing license vendor, or online. A list of the tags available is on the IDFG website,. Hunters must apply between August 5 and August 15 to be in the drawing. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) will hold a supplemental drawing to allocate the controlled hunt tags that went unclaimed. Regardless of the reasons, these unclaimed tags will make some hunters very happy about having a second chance at drawing limited entry hunt opportunities. Perhaps a medical issue came up or, some family vacation plans were changed. It could have been changes to fall work schedules. When you buy a machine, you’ll often see two speeds: the standard clock rate and the Turbo Boost rate. In the Intel line of processors which are in all modern Macs and many PCs, Intel calls this ramp-up in speed Turbo Boost. Then, later on, you decide to transcode some video, maybe rendering from FinalCut or ScreenFlow that’s even more work for the processor to do so it has to speed up even more. This is a bit more work so the processor will increase to a higher clock speed. With a laptop, this is extremely important because it means longer battery life.īut let’s say you decide to watch a video on YouTube. If you’re just doodling around writing emails, your CPU doesn’t have much to do, so it will slow down to a very low clock speed. This is a huge advantage from a power consumption perspective. Modern CPUs can operate at varying clock speeds. Ok, so we’ve established that our new 21.5″ iMac has a clock speed of 2.3GHz. For simplicity of discussion, I’m going to ignore the effect that multi-core processors and multi-threaded processes have on speed. If you try to compare to a different processor family, such as the i3, i7 or i9s, then you can’t just look at the clock speed to know how fast the machine will go. In our entry-level iMac example, a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 would be faster than a 2.0GHz i5. If we stay within a given processor line, we can speed up our computations by getting a processor with a faster clock speed. The clock speed is the number of cycles per second in which the processor does its operations. The speed in GHz is the clock rate or also called the clock speed. The CPU family is the Intel Core series, the specific processor line is the i5, and the processor speed is 2.3GHz. Let’s use as an example the entry-level iMac with a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5. CPU stands for Central Processing Unit, which we often just refer to as a processor. When you choose a computer you’ll see information about the CPU family and about the speed of that CPU. CPU Clock Rates and Turbo Boost Entry-Level iMac Processor Once we’re done with the lesson, I’ll explain my specific problem and then explain how you might like and need Turbo Boost Switcher even if you don’t have banana fans. Not too deep, because we get in over my head pretty quickly, but deep enough to provide some understanding that may help you in your computing journey. But we can’t start with the amazing solution I found in the app Turbo Boost Switcher until we back up and learn a little bit about computer processors. This article is a story of how my fans are going bananas on my new 16″ MacBook Pro. Stephen dropped another GRAMMY winner, Revelation Part I The Root of Life as a celebration of roots rock reggae, in 2011. Stephen’s long-awaited, self-produced debut solo album, the multi-genre spanning Mind Control arrived in early 2007 followed in late 2008 by the stripped-down Mind Control Acoustic - both GRAMMY recipients. He went on to helm the production on projects by several Marley family members including youngest brother Damian ’s GRAMMY winning albums Halfway Tree and the influential blockbuster Welcome To Jamrock. Rita managed the Melody Makers and Bob wrote their first single, 1979's "Children Playing in the Streets." In 1981 the spotlight shone on Stephen's precocious talents when he took the lead on "Sugar Pie."Ī guitarist, percussionist, vocalist and songwriter with the Melody Makers, Stephen also assisted in the production of each of their albums including the GRAMMY winning Conscious Party (1989), One Bright Day (1990) and Fallen Is Babylon (1997). The youngest son of Bob and Rita Marley, the 51-year-old's musical journey commenced at age 6 when he formed the Melody Makers with his older siblings, sisters Cedella and Sharon and brother Ziggy, the group’s leader. Stephen continues to build upon his own esteemed legacy. Old Soul ’s reflective title track honors Stephen's musical inspirations - especially his father: "Fast forward to 1981, my dad moved on and so did I, inside I kept his songs alive, so they say I’m an old soul, tribute to the ones who made it all possible/inside me your legacy lives on." "Cool As The Breeze" is a heartrending tribute to Stephen’s son, reggae artist Jo Mersa Marley, who died of acute asthma exacerbation in December 2022 at just 31 years old. It's an endearing and eclectic acoustic set, awash in filigreed guitar strums, tinkling piano keys, swirling flutes, and mesmerizing percussion patterns. Primarily recorded during the pandemic inside a garage on a family farm in Florida, Old Soul brings renewed luster to reggae classics and standards by the Beatles, Ray Charles and Frank Sinatra alongside stunning originals, each delivered with Stephen's warm rasp. His latest album, Old Soul, continues this boundary-blurring trajectory. Yet, there is magic in Sancerre that is rarely, if ever, replicated. You may ask why? the world is full of brilliant examples of the Sauvignon Blanc grape, not least from New Zealand’s Marlborough region. Today, no self-respecting wine list or merchant can omit Sancerre. 13 Villages and Three Hamlets Produce Sancerre Today The introduction of the railway in the 19th century only broadened Sancerre’s appeal, allowing the wines to be easily transported to the restaurants of Paris and beyond. As Sancerre prospered under the Duchy of Burgundy’s control, the aromatic wines from the region started to find a willing audience across France. Although the zone was awarded appellation status in 1936, vines had been grown along the Loire Valley since the 1st century AD – the Romans were responsible for creating France’s love affair with the grape. This terroir has been cultivated for many, many centuries. A majestic sea of vines stretches along the west side of the river bank – planted at very high densities, and the best Sancerre is both concentrated and racy, a testament to the area’s exceptional terroir. Over 2,500 hectares of vines are planted in the appellation, located at the eastern end of the lower Loire Valley, southeast of Orleans. But despite the proliferation of excellent wines from across the New World, few would argue that Sauvignon Blanc does not reach its apogee in the vineyards of Sancerre. Ironically enough, the grape’s aficionados may not even realize that Sancerre has been in the Sauvignon business for centuries. Unfortunately, this has unwittingly enabled New Zealand and other countries, such as Chile, to gobble up France’s market share and install themselves as benchmark growers of pungent, gooseberry-scented Sauvignon. It was taken for granted that white Sancerre was 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Sancerre, anchored by proud traditions and appellation customs, saw no need to advertise its signature variety. However, in the 20th century, growers could only watch as their birthright, as they saw it, was challenged and usurped by nations like New Zealand, who always display the grape variety on the label. The more usual methods of damping, however, are the use of a special material or fluid in series or in parallel to the applied load, the reaction time(s) of which are out of phase with the system. These are the most complex damping methods and tend to be reserved for expensive and sensitive equipment. when amplification is detected the mass/support can be slid in either direction, thereby altering its natural frequency. An example of such a design for, say, a beam ( Fig 3) would be to apply a sliding mass or guide support anywhere along the beam’s length that can be repositioned during operation according to pre-defined conditions. that may be adjusted during operation to modify an element's natural frequency. Shock Absorption: This is the slowing down of the applied load and/or its release, thereby reducing its dynamic amplification factor (see CalQlata’s Shock Load calculator) and hence the load(s) and deformation(s) in the system.įrequency Shift: This is the altering of a system’s natural frequency away from its operating frequency ( Fig 3). The normal solution to this problem (resonance) is to reduce (or dampen) the effect of the dynamically applied cyclic load by shock absorption, however, shifting the natural frequency of the element also works particularly well. to a different frequency)Ģ) Altering the stiffness of the sprung systemģ) Altering the location of the repeated loadĤ) Reducing the magnitude of the repeated loadĥ) Reducing the dynamic amplification of the repeated load Vibration damping is the reduction or avoidance of resonance and can be achieved by any of the following actions:ġ) Altering the natural frequency of the sprung system (i.e. For example:Īs can be seen in Shafts Fig 2, any value within the range 0.86 1.3 produces the opposite benefit and disadvatage in that transitional resonance will always occur but amplitude magnification will normally be less than 1 rubber), between the mounting frame and floor or base to dampen vibrations.Įach position ( 1, 2, 3 and 4) will have a different natural frequency (ƒⁿ) and must be selected to avoid coinciding with the operating frequency (ƒ) of the vibrating equipment ( Fig 2) see Support Positioning below. As can be seen in Fig 2, the amplitude magnification (Mᶠ) of an undamped (ζ=0) element operating at its natural frequency could become infinite.įig 1 shows the options available for positioning supports on a typical sprung system using a special material (e.g. Thus a force applied at an element’s natural frequency will generate a different deformation than would be expected from a static load (see Damping Ratio below). When it is subjected to a cyclic load close to its natural frequency the resultant deformation will not be as expected, because at this frequency the element’s own mass and motions will influence deformation. The stresses and strains induced in an element are totally predictable if it behaves exactly as expected, however. |
